Melinda Katz, Yetta Kurland, and Mercedes Narcisse Join Christine Quinn As Endorsed Candidates
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILY’s List, the nation’s leading resource for women in politics, announced its endorsement of Melinda Katz for Queens Borough President, Yetta Kurland for New York City Council District 3, and Mercedes Narcisse for New York City Council District 46.
“EMILY’s List is proud to endorse three such outstanding pro-choice Democratic women for local office in New York City,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “Melinda Katz’s long tenure as a public servant and champion for affordable housing, Yetta Kurland’s civil rights activism and strong grassroots support, and Mercedes Narcisse’s decade long career as a healthcare professional make them all ideal candidates and we are excited to support their strong campaigns. We are thrilled that New York City has such a deep bench of amazing women leaders who are ready to get things done. From coast to coast, the EMILY’s List community is committed to electing more state and local leaders like Melinda, Yetta, and Mercedes – leaders who will fight for women and families at the local level.”
Melinda Katz is a candidate for Queens Borough President. She is an attorney and has previously served on the New York City Council and in the state legislature. Melinda is the only woman running in a crowded all-male field, but has already distinguished herself as a dedicated public servant whose past service as Director of the Community Boards for the office of the Queens Borough President has given her campaign strong footing. EMILY’s List previously endorsed Katz for her Comptroller race in 2009 as well as her congressional race in 1998.
EMILY’s List Political Opportunity Program trainee Yetta Kurland is running for New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn’s current seat, in NYC Council District 3. She is an attorney and LGBT advocate whose work as a civil rights defender for almost 20 years has earned her campaign strong grassroots support. Yetta has already received endorsements from: the New York State Council of Machinists; District Council 37, New York City’s largest public employee union; Transit Workers Union Local 100; as well as Communication Workers of America Local 1180, making her the first to receive endorsement by three major public sector unions for the 2013 City Council elections.
Mercedes Narcisse is running for termed city councilman Lew Fidler’s 46th district seat. She is a successful Haitian-American business woman with strong ties to her community. Mercedes and her campaign staff have trained with the EMILY’s List Political Opportunity Program, and are running a strong campaign well-positioned to win.
During the 2011- 2012 election cycle, EMILY’s List helped elect an historic number of candidates – the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country, 19 new women to the House, six Senate incumbents, and three new Senators – all the first women to represent their states in the Senate. And this cycle, women we’ve helped elect include the first Hindu and first female combat veterans to serve in the House, the first openly gay Senator, and the first Asian American woman to serve in the Senate. With a community that has quintupled since 2010 – now more than two million members strong – EMILY's List is one of the largest political action committees in the nation. Since its founding in 1985, EMILY's List has worked to elect 100 pro-choice Democratic women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 10 governors, and over five hundred women to state and local office. In the 2011-2012 cycle, EMILY's List had the largest number of members and donors in our 28 year history, and raised a record-breaking $52 million dollars.
